Show Us Your Books: July Edition

Good Morning Everyone,

It's time to share what we read for the past month! I know I say it every month but this is the post that I look forward to the most! I can't wait to see what you all have read this past month!

Life According to Steph

Here's what I read:

What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty- I liked this book but I didn't love it. I now understand exactly what everyone means when they say she is a one trick pony or that she has a set formula of how she does things. This felt exactly the same as the others. I still enjoyed the story but I wasn't as surprised by the outcome as her first books since I basically knew the end of the formula.

The 100 Foot Journey by Richard C. Morais- The descriptions in this book were really beautiful. Honestly I love reading about people cooking and good food...I have no idea why but it is really calming to me. However toward the end of this book it moved into a more political/philosophical place and I got a little bored....it was still a good read but by the end I was limping through it. I'm still going to watch the movie though.

A Good Marriage by Stephen King- I loved this story. However I felt like it was a bait and switch. I picked up the book because this was the main title and it sounded really intriguing. The story was intriguing and suspenseful but it was TOO SHORT. I thought this was a book with a "bonus story" in it as the title claimed. But this one was so short that it felt like this was the bonus story! It was so short and left me wanting more. I was immediately drawn in by the characters only to be cut off. What I got to read I loved though so I guess I should be glad they are making a movie out of it!

1922 by Stephen King- This was supposed to be the "bonus story" but it was really the longer of the two. I was immediately disappointed with it because it wasn't the story I wanted to be reading but after getting through it I can say it was a good story. It wasn't as engaging as the first one, and I felt like it was trying REALLY hard to be. It wasn't a bad story and had I read it on it's own and not right after one that was AMAZING and cut short then I probably would have really enjoyed it.

Dad is Fat by Jim Gaffigan- I have no idea why I picked this up honestly. I knew Jim Gaffigan was a comedian and I thought he was pretty funny, but I guess that title was what really drew me in...and I am thrilled it did! This book is hilarious, sharp, slightly opinionated, and just really brutally honest. I'm not sure those without kids would appreciate it quite as much but hey you might! Or at the very least you might get an inside scope of what a parent's brain looks like. I loved how totally honest he was about himself and his family and everyone's reactions when you have a big family. I only have Kyra now but if I had my way I would probably have three to four more...which usually makes people look at me like I'm an alien. Jim has five kids. In New York City. Seriously what more setup for hilarity do you need than that?

That's it for me! I am excited to read what you all have been reading and add to my ever growing "To Be Read" list! Happy Tuesday Everyone!

  1. Oooh, this reminds me I have to read The Hundred-Foot Journey. I've been meaning to read this before I see the movie. I still have to read Dad is Fat. I read Food: A Love Story by him and thought it was okay.

  2. What Alice Forgot is actually my favorite Moriarty book so far! Maybe it's because I read it first? Jim Gaffigan is my favorite comedian, so I want to read both of his books, even if Dad is Fat won't be too relevant to me since I don't have kids yet.

  4. I would be annoyed by that bait & switch too.

  5. I love Jim Gaffigan as a comedian but I don't know that i'll read his books, despite how many people like them.

And yes! Moriarty is definitely formulaic. Her books are very predictable.

  8. A Good Marriage sounds good, I added it to my "to read" list.

I've heard many people say that Liane Moriarty's stories are all the same. I only read The Husband's Secret but I did enjoy it.

I read Dad is Fat and didn't really enjoy it but I also don't have any children so maybe I couldn't relate.

  9. I love Jim Gaffigan and was surprised by how great that book is! I didn't realize A Good Marriage was so short, but most King books are so long, I might welcome the quickness of it. Haha! I've been meaning to read it since I saw it on Netflix.

  10. I have a friend who read the Jim Gaffigan book and really enjoyed it, but I haven't felt drawn to it. Last night, I finished Big Little Lies, and it won't be my last Liane Moriarty book.

  11. I loved What Alice Forgot, but it's the only Moriarty book I've read so that may be why! I feel like I may just watch the movie of The 100 Foot Journey and skip the book.
