What I Read December 2016 Edition

December is always a hard month for me to get much reading done. The holidays and my birthday keep me pretty busy. I always make up for it in January though when I tend to stay indoors and not venture out into the miserable weather. I will never say that I don't enjoy the cold though because honestly I would rather it was only 4 degrees than have to deal with anything over 70!

Anyhow to the books!

1. I'm Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid - I am still not sure what to think about this one. It was weird and creepy but really REALLY slow up until the very last bit, then it was a heart-stopping pace of crazy. I am not sure I enjoyed it or if I was just shocked by it. Honestly if I had not read reviews that told me to stick it out until the end I am not sure that I would have continued to plow through this one to get to the good stuff. So if you are interested in it I would warn that it takes a LONG time to get to the messed up and nail biting part but once you do you won't be able to put this one down. Read at your own discretion!

2. Shanghai Girls by Lisa See - I was listening to this one via audio book and had been listening for what felt like hours. I mean I had given Kyra a bath and taken a bath myself and done hair and nails and all that jazz but when I checked my progress I was only on page 78 of the book! Slow narration and a  rather brutal scene in the beginning killed this one for me. It wasn't a bad book really but I definitely preferred Snowflower and the Secret Fan to this one. If you are going to read this one just read the actual book and avoid the audio book completely!

  2. I haven't read a ton of audiobooks, but I hate when narrators (or the story itself) just moves way too slow. I'm not familiar with Lisa See, but I definitely want to check out her work now.

  3. I find it difficult to stick with really really slow books.

  4. I'm Thinking of Ending Things is on my TBR and I need to remember that it pays off in the end, so I don't DNF for being slow in the beginning. I prefer fast-paced books so I am not always very patient with slower-paced books.

  5. I didn't think I'm Thinking of Ending Things had a slow narration at all. Confusing as fuck but not slow. And that end, though. Holy crap! I had to read it like 3 times to understand what I just read.

  8. My favorite thing about audible is the ability to speak up the speaking. I'm listening to a Afghan themed book right now and the speech was soooo slooooowwww.. Bumped it up to 1.2/1.4 (character depending) and it's MUCH better. No one takes that long to say words!
